Wood Shingles
Slate | Wood Shingles/Shakes | Tile | Asphalt Shingles | Sheet Metal | EPDM | Flat Roofs
Wood shakes and shingles provide a warm and elegant look (and even a rich aroma!) to the top of your home. These types of shingles are generally made from cedar and occasionally redwood or southern pine. More expensive than asphalt shingles, but less expensive than slate, wood shingles provide a look that many homeowners find irresistible. Their rich, warm color and texture blend beautifully in any natural environment. The natural effects of aging and weathering give shingles and shakes, in time, an attractive silvery grey color.
Cedar shakes and shingles contain a natural preservative making them uncommonly durable in their natural state. They can also be pressure treated for enhanced durability or fire retardance. Another primary benefit to shakes or shingles is their high degree of thermal insulation. Proper application of cedar shingles and shakes gives outstanding rigidity and resilience against extreme weather including high winds and pounding hail.
Concerns about the environmental impact of the production and use of building materials have focused attention on the need for products which are produced from renewable resources. Western Red Cedar is harvested under a sustained yield policy which guarantees forest regeneration, and the production of cedar shakes and shingles is virtually pollution free - making this an excellent choice in roofing material.
